又问：「用功收心时，有声色在前，如常闻见，恐不是专一。」
曰：「如何欲不闻见？除是槁木死灰、耳聋目盲则可。只是虽闻见而不流去便是。」
曰：「昔有人静坐，其子隔壁读书，不知其勤惰。程子称其甚敬。何如？」
曰：「伊川恐亦是讥他。」
又问：「用功收心时，有声色在面前，照常听见看见，恐怕不算专一。」
先生说：「怎么要不闻不见？除非槁木死灰、耳聋目盲才可。只是虽闻见而不随它流去便是。」
问：「从前有人静坐，他儿子在隔壁读书，勤惰都不知道。程子称他『甚敬』。怎么看？」
答：「伊川恐怕也是在讥他。」
I asked further: 'Gathering the mind in work, with sights and sounds before me, I hear and see as usual — not single-minded, I fear.'
The Master said: 'Why would you not hear and see? Only withered wood, cold ashes, the deaf and blind escape. Simply do not stream away with what is heard and seen.'
'Once a man sat in stillness while his son read in the next room, unknowing whether diligent or idle; Chengzi praised his reverence.'
'Yichuan, I fear, was mocking him.'
