问:「静时亦觉意思好,才遇事便不同,如何?」
先生曰:「是徒知养静,而不用克己工夫也。如此,临事便要倾倒。人须在事上磨,方立得住,方能静亦定,动亦定。」
有人问:「静的时候也觉得心境很好,一遇到事便不一样了,怎么办?」
先生说:「这是只知涵养静气,而不用克己的功夫。这样,遇到事便要倾倒。人必须在事上磨练,才立得住,才能静也定、动也定。」
Someone asked: "In quiet I feel fine, but the moment affairs arise it is different. What to do?"
The Master said: "You know only nourishing stillness and neglect the work of self-mastery. Meeting affairs, you will be bowled over. One must be tempered on affairs to stand firm — then one is settled in stillness and settled in movement alike."
