问：「『中人以下，不可以语上』。愚的人与之语上尚且不进；况不与之语，可乎？」
先生曰：「不是圣人终不与语。圣人的心，忧不得人人都做圣人。只是人的资质不同，施教不可躐等。中人以下的人：便与他说『性』、说『命』，他也不省得；也须谩谩[1]琢磨他起来。」
问：「『中人以下，不可以语上』。愚钝的人，对他讲上等道理尚且不能进步；何况不讲给他，行吗？」
先生说：「并不是圣人始终不与他讲。圣人之心，只忧不能人人都做圣人。只是人的资质不同，施教不可越级。中人以下的人，便与他讲『性』讲『命』，他也领会不了；也须慢慢琢磨他起来。」
Asked: 'Those below the mean are not to be told the highest — the dull make no headway even when told; not telling them, is that right?'
The Master said: 'It is not that the sage never tells them. His heart grieves only that all cannot become sages. Endowments differ; teaching may not skip grades. Tell the below-mean of nature and the Mandate, and they cannot take it in — they too must be ground and polished up slowly.'
