问：「『不睹不闻』是说本体，『戒慎恐惧』是说功夫否？」
先生曰：「此处须信得本体原是『不睹不闻』的，亦原是『戒慎恐惧』的。『戒慎恐惧』不曾在『不睹不闻』上加得些子。见得真时，便谓：『戒慎恐惧是本体，不睹不闻是功夫』，亦得。」
问：「『不睹不闻』是说本体，『戒慎恐惧』是说功夫吗？」
先生说：「这里必须信得本体原是『不睹不闻』的，也原是『戒慎恐惧』的。『戒慎恐惧』并不曾在『不睹不闻』上添加一丝。见得真时，便说『戒慎恐惧是本体，不睹不闻是功夫』，也可以。」
Asked: 'Is the unseen and unheard said of the substance, vigilance and fear of the work?'
The Master said: 'Here you must trust that the substance was from the first both unseen-and-unheard and vigilant-and-fearful; vigilance adds not a thread upon the unseen. Truly seen, even to say vigilance is the substance and the unseen the work will serve.'
