癸末春，邹谦之来越问学，居数日，先生送别于浮峰[1]。是夕与希渊诸友移舟宿延寿寺。秉烛夜坐，先生慨怅不已。
曰：「江涛烟柳，故人倏在百里外矣！」
一友问曰：「先生何念谦之之深也？」
先生曰：「曾子所谓『以能问于不能，以多问于寡，有若无，宜若虚，犯而不校』，若谦之者，良近之矣。」
癸未年春，邹谦之来越中问学，住了几天，先生送到浮峰。当晚与希渊等友人移舟夜宿延寿寺，秉烛夜坐，先生感慨怅惘不已，说：「江涛烟柳，故人倏忽已在百里之外了！」
一位朋友问：「先生为何这样深切思念谦之？」
先生说：「曾子所谓『以能问于不能，以多问于寡，有若无，实若虚，犯而不校』——像谦之这样的人，很接近了。」
In the spring of guiwei, Zou Qianzhi came to Yue to study; after some days the Master saw him off at Fufeng. That evening, with Xiyuan and other friends, he moved his boat to lodge at Yanshou Temple; sitting by candlelight he sighed long, saying: 'River waves and misty willows — the old friend is suddenly a hundred li away!'
A friend asked why he yearned so after Qianzhi.
The Master said: 'Zengzi's able, yet asking of the unable; having much, yet asking of those with little; having as though lacking, full as though empty, offended yet not contending — of such as Qianzhi one may say: near indeed.'
