先生初归越时，朋友踪迹尚寥落；既后，四方来游者日进。癸末年已后，环先生而居者比屋；如天妃、光相诸刹，每当一室，常合食者数十人，夜无卧处，更相就席，歌声彻昏旦。南镇、禹穴、阳明洞诸山远近寺刹，徒足所到，无非同志游寓所在。先生每临讲座，前后左右环坐而听者，常不下数百人，送往迎来，月无虚日；至有在侍更岁，不能遍记其姓名者。
每临别，先生常叹曰：「君等虽别，不出在天地间，苟同此志，吾亦可以忘形似矣。」
诸生每听讲出门，未尝不跳跃称快。尝闻之同门先辈曰：「南都以前，朋友从游者虽众，未有如在越之盛者。此虽讲学日久，孚信渐博，要亦先生之学日进，感召之机，申变[1]无力，亦自有不同也。」

每次临别，先生常叹道：「你们虽然走了，也走不出天地之间；只要同有此志，我也就可以忘掉形迹了。」
学生们每次听讲出门，没有不跳跃称快的。曾听同门前辈说：「南京以前，跟从游学的朋友虽然多，没有像在越中之盛的。这虽是讲学日久、信服渐广，但也是先生之学日进、感召之机自有不同的缘故。」
When the Master first returned to Yue, the friends who came were few; thereafter learners from every quarter pressed in daily. After the guiwei year, house stood packed against house about him; in temples like Tianfei and Guangxiang, each room commonly fed several dozen from one pot, with no lying places at night — men taking the mats in turn, song running from dusk to dawn. South Town, Yu's Cave, the caves of Yangming — every temple far and near that foot could reach lodged the fellows of the way. At each lecture the listeners ringing him round, fore and aft, left and right, were rarely fewer than several hundred; farewells and welcomes left no empty day in the month; some attended whole years through whose very names he could not all remember.
At every parting he would sigh: 'Though you go, you go not out of heaven and earth; sharing this resolve, we may well forget the outward form.'
The students, leaving the lecture, never failed to leap and cry out with delight. I once heard the seniors of the school say: 'Before Nanjing the following was many, yet never as now in Yue — the lecturing long and trust grown broad, yes; but the Master's own learning advancing daily, and the quickening he called forth unlike any other.'
