门人在座，有动止甚矜持者。
先生曰：「人若矜持太过，终是有弊。」
曰：「矜得太过，如何有弊？」
曰︰「人只有许多精神，若专在容貌上用功，则于中心照管不及者多矣。」
有太直率者。
先生曰：「如今讲此学，却外面全不检束，又分心与事为二矣。」
门人在座，有一位举止过分矜持。
先生说：「人若矜持太过，终究有弊病。」
问：「矜持太过，怎么有弊？」
答：「人只有这些精神，若专在容貌上用功，那么对内心的照管就顾不上的多了。」
又有一位过于直率。
先生说：「如今讲这学问，外面却全不检点，又是把心和事分作二了。」
Among the disciples present, one was over-stiff in bearing.
The Master said: 'Too much stiffness breeds its own harm.'
'How is stiffness harmful?'
'A man has only so much spirit; spend it all on the surface, and the heart within goes largely unattended.'
Another was overly blunt and loose.
The Master said: 'Professing this learning yet wholly unchecked without — that again splits mind and affair in two.'
