先生一日出游禹穴[1]，顾田间禾曰：「能几何时，又如此长了！」
范兆期[2]在傍曰：「此只是有根。学问能自植根，亦不患无长。」
先生曰：「人孰无根？良知即是天植灵根，自生生不息；但著了私累，把此根戕贼蔽塞，不得发生耳。」
先生一日出游禹穴，看着田里的禾苗说：「才多久，又长这么高了！」
范兆期在旁说：「这只是因为有根。学问能自己植下根，也不愁不生长。」
先生说：「谁没有根？良知就是天植的灵根，自然生生不息；只是着了私累，把这根戕害蔽塞，不得生长发芽罢了。」
Out one day at Yu's Cave, the Master looked on the young grain: 'So soon, and grown so tall!'
Fan Zhaoqi at his side said: 'Only because it has a root. Let learning plant its own root, and growth is sure.'
The Master said: 'Who lacks a root? Innate knowledge is heaven-planted, quick with unending life; only the clutter of the private wounds and chokes it, and it cannot sprout.'
