问:「声、色、货、利,恐良知亦不能无。」

先生曰:「固然。但初学用功,却须扫除荡涤,勿使留积。则适然来遇,始不为累,自然顺而应之。良知只在声、色、货、利上用功,能致得良知精精明明、毫发无蔽;则声、色、货、利之交,无非天则流行矣。」

问:「声色货利,恐怕良知也不能没有。」

先生说:「固然。但初学用功,却须扫除荡涤,勿使留积。那么偶然遇上时,才不为所累,自然顺应它。良知只在声色货利上用功,能致得良知精精明明、毫发无蔽,那么声色货利的应酬,无非天则的流行了。」

Asked: 'Sound, beauty, goods and gain — innate knowledge too, I fear, cannot be without them.'

The Master said: 'Indeed. But the beginner's work must sweep and scour them, letting none lodge and gather. Then, met by chance, they burden not, and one responds of itself. Innate knowledge works precisely upon sound, beauty, goods and gain: extended to bright and bright, unveilled by a hair, even that commerce is the flowing of heaven's rule.'
