先生曰：「吾与诸公讲『致知』、『格物』，日日是此，讲一、二十年俱是如此。诸君听吾言，实去用功；见吾讲一番，自觉长进一番。否则只作一场话说，虽听之亦何用？」
先生说：「我与诸位讲『致知』『格物』，天天是这个，讲一二十年也都是这个。诸位听我的话，切实去用功，每听我讲一番，自觉长进一番。否则只当作一场闲话说说，听了又有什么用？」
The Master said: 'Extension and investigation are what I lecture you on, day after day this, one year and twenty years this. Take my words and work in earnest: each lecture heard, a step gained. Else it is all idle talk — what use in the hearing?'
