尝见先生送二三耆宿出门,退坐于中轩,若有忧色。德洪趋进请问。
先生曰:「顷与诸老论及此学,真员凿方枘。此道坦如道路[1],世儒往往自加荒塞,终身陷荆棘之场而不悔,吾不知其何说也!」
德洪退,谓朋友曰:「先生诲人,不择衰朽,仁人悯物之心也。」
曾见先生送两三位年高宿儒出门,退坐在轩中,面有忧色。德洪上前请教。
先生说:「刚才与诸位老先生论及此学,真是圆凿方枘。此道平坦如同大路,世俗儒者往往自己把它荒芜阻塞,终身陷在荆棘丛中而不悔,我不知道这是怎么说!」
德洪退下后对朋友说:「先生教诲人,不挑拣衰朽,这是仁人悯物之心啊。」
I once saw the Master see two or three aged scholars out, then withdraw to the porch with a clouded face. I drew near to ask.
He said: 'Just now, speaking of this learning with those elders — a round peg in a square socket. This Way lies open as a highway; the world's scholars choke it with their own brambles, lifelong in the thorns and unrepenting — I know not what to say!'
When I withdrew I told my friends: 'The Master teaches none by their age or decay — the heart of the humane that pities all.'
